Tom Soloveitzik - Air 2011 (Hedim 004)

It was getting dark, and after almost eight years of absence, I was returning to the London neighbourhood where I used to live. Unintentionally, I had taken a little detour that had kept me walking for longer than I expected. The sound of the suitcase wheels kept bouncing and bouncing back, alternating between paved streets and cobblestones. I took my shoes off at the entrance to the flat I was staying in, and my memory adjusted back to the shape and size of the interior spaces I used to inhabit. It was in a room quite similar to the one I was in now [then] that the urge to [re]act had emerged. What initiated these recordings back in November 2011 were the Cairo demonstrations that took place in Tahrir Square. It was a moment in time for optimism, a fleeting feeling that things could change. Two or three days after my return, an eerie roar filled the kitchen space and caught me suddenly off guard. What the hell was that? This humongous sound entity, it turned out from the report that came later, carried the voices of tens of thousands from another Tahrir Square, in Baghdad. It seemed that the radio speakers could not cope with the sheer wall of sound emanating from them; [nor should they have done]. In a weird, reversed, déjà-entendre, I was thrown back to the memories of moments and sounds from my first stay, as if my personal timeline had shrunk and time had folded into itself.
